The Materials Performance and Durability team in GE Aerospace Research conducts research and innovates around new high temperature materials and composites, coating materials (thermal, environmental, wear & catalytic), coating processes - these materials and processes enable the future of flight possible, as we enable flights to be safer and more sustainable.We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Scientist in Experimental Mechanics of Aerospace Composites to lead research projects in the domain of design, development, and testing of advanced aerospace composites. The successful candidate will have a strong background in experimental mechanics and extensive experience in designing and conducting experiments on aerospace composites.

Site Overview

Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead projects and guide a team of researchers in the design, development, and testing of advanced aerospace composites to meet business and technical goals.

  • Develop new experimental techniques and methodologies to improve the performance, durability, and safety of aerospace composites.

  • Conduct experiments on aerospace composites using various testing methods such as tensile, compressive, and shear testing, and non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing, thermography and x-ray tomography.

  • Analyze experimental data using statistical methods and present results to the team and senior leadership.

  • Collaborate with other teams and departments within the research center to integrate new technologies and processes into the development of aerospace composites.

  • Manage research projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and reporting.

  • Drive innovation and growth of team in the domain of composites, including proposing new research ideas and building research proposals.

  • Mentor junior colleagues in in both technical and leadership domains.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or any related field. Alternatively, M.Tech / M.S. in similar domains along with additional relevant experience would also qualify.

  • Overall 10+ years of experience, with 7+ years of experience in experimental mechanics of composites

  • Extensive experience in designing and conducting experiments on aerospace composites using various testing methods

  • Strong knowledge of composite material science, manufacturing processes, and design principles

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing, thermography and x-ray tomography

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
