Job Description
- Assembles, modifies, and repairs complex aircraft structural components and major assemblies, with a strong focus on precision, quality, and adherence to aerospace standards.
- This role works primarily with sheet metal and structural components on large aircraft, performing structural modifications, minor part-fitting operations, and corrosion removal while following detailed technical data and engineering instructions.
Responsibilities
- Assemble and create major structural assemblies and perform minor part-fitting operations such as filing, sawing, burring, trimming, framing, riveting, drilling, and reaming on aircraft structures.
- Align parts on jigs and aerospace vehicles using templates and fixtures to ensure proper fit, alignment, and structural integrity.
- Measure parts with micrometers, calipers, and other precision tools to verify dimensions and ensure compliance with engineering specifications and tolerances.
- Modify incomplete and complete assemblies by incorporating engineering changes, rework instructions, and structural updates into the aircraft structure.
- Perform structural repairs and refinishing, including airframe corrosion removal and component repair, in accordance with approved technical data.
- Complete installations in accordance with technical drawings while maintaining required edge distance, pitch, and other structural requirements.
- Interpret and apply applicable technical schematics, diagrams, blueprints, manuals, and publications to perform structural work accurately and safely.
- Monitor and verify quality using statistical process control or other quality control procedures, ensuring that all work meets regulatory and organizational standards.
- Support large-scale aircraft modification and mission integration work, including structural modifications on widebody aircraft platforms.
- Work safely in a safety-sensitive environment, following all procedures related to handling hazardous materials, operating tools and equipment, and performing aviation-related duties.
- Climb stairs and steps, work at various heights, and maneuver around aircraft structures to access work areas as needed.
- Operate or work around vehicles, heavy or potentially dangerous equipment, and machinery in support of aircraft maintenance and modification activities.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 5+ years of aviation structures experience; military aviation structures experience is welcomed.
- At least 2+ years of hands-on experience specifically in structural assembly, repair, or modification on aircraft.
- Proficiency in aircraft sheet metal work, including cutting, trimming, drilling, reaming, and riveting using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Strong experience with aircraft structures, including heavy maintenance, modifications, or component repair on commercial, military, or specialized aircraft.
- Ability to understand and interpret technical schematics, diagrams, blueprints, manuals, and publications related to aircraft structures.
- Ability to complete structural installations in accordance with technical drawings while maintaining required edge distance, pitch, and other structural parameters.
- Progressive experience with structure assembly and minor part fitting techniques, including repair and refinishing such as airframe corrosion removal.
- Experience with riveting and use of rivet guns and related sheet metal tools in an aviation environment.
- Familiarity with aircraft maintenance and aircraft modification practices, including inspection and repair of structural components.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance,
- Capability to frequently perform repetitive hand, arm, and finger motions with strong finger and hand dexterity.
- Ability to frequently use close, distance, and depth perception vision, including distinguishing between different colors as required for tasks.
- Ability to frequently use hearing to discern different tones and volumes in a noisy environment.
- Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 50 pounds in the course of performing structural work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working on military aircraft, including airframe structures and component repair, is highly valued.
- Previous Experience in Aviation maintenance, aircraft modification, or heavy maintenance operations on large aircraft platforms.
- Familiarity with aviation and defense environments, including working on high-visibility, complex modification programs.
- Experience working with corrosion removal, refinishing, and structural restoration on airframes.
- Exposure to or experience in environments where explosives, dangerous, or hazardous materials are inspected, handled, or transported.
- Experience inspecting structures, equipment, or vehicles in a safety-sensitive aviation setting.
- Comfort working in a setting with loud noises, fumes, or hazardous chemicals and materials, while following all safety protocols.
- Ownership of personal tools in good working order suitable for aircraft structural and sheet metal work.
Work Environment
- Monday through Friday schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,
- You will work in and around hangars, shops, and aircraft, frequently climbing stairs and steps and accessing various areas of the airframe.
- This is a safety-sensitive position where you may inspect, handle, or be in proximity to explosives, dangerous or hazardous materials, and operate or work near vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery.
- The role requires consistent use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety and quality procedures while performing aviation-related structural duties.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Vandalia, OH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $40.00/hr.
