Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Winfrith, Dorset (Hybrid working available)
TKMS ATLAS UK develops, supplies and supports advanced maritime technology for customers worldwide. Working closely with the UK Royal Navy and international partners, we deliver cutting-edge systems that protect lives at sea.
We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in the development of mechanical systems for complex maritime platforms, including sonar, autonomous systems and underwater technologies. This is an opportunity to take technical ownership, influence design decisions and support the development of junior engineers within a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
The Role
You will be involved across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and design through to integration, test and customer acceptance. Working closely with electrical, software and systems teams, you will help deliver robust, compliant and innovative mechanical solutions for safety-critical applications.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and contribute to the design and development of mechanical systems for maritime applications

Produce and review CAD models, drawings and technical documentation

Define mechanical architectures, materials and components in line with performance and compliance requirements

Support integration, testing and commissioning activities

Conduct and participate in design reviews, ensuring technical quality and accuracy

Mentor and support junior engineers

Interface with suppliers and customers to resolve technical issues

Contribute to bid activity and future technical strategy where required
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience

Strong mechanical design background, including materials, stress and manufacturability considerations

Proficiency in CAD tools, ideally Solid Edge, and familiarity with engineering drawing standards

Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering environments

Understanding of systems engineering principles

Ability to translate user and system requirements into practical mechanical solutions

Experience designing for underwater or marine environments is desirable but not essential
Security Requirements
Due to the nature of the work, the successful candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC).
