Overview of role:
The Data Visualization Centre of Excellence promotes data-driven decision-making by enabling leadership and business units unravel complex patterns and hidden insights in data. With a blend of technical expertise and creative flair focused on data visualization and storytelling, we harness innovative tools and design principles and work with business units at all stages of the data value chain to transform raw data into compelling visualizations and meaningful narratives.Reporting to the Senior Manager, you will be responsible for bridging the gap between the technical and business worlds, by translating real-world business problems into advanced analytical concepts that drive actionable insights & recommendations.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including data governance, data engineering, external collaborators, and business stakeholders, to identify and prioritize opportunities, define product strategy and requirements, navigate uncertainty during complex engagements, and effectively communicate results.To be successful in this role, you should have advanced communication and interpersonal skills, as well as previous experience in product management, data analysis, business intelligence, data engineering and/or data science. You should be known for your creative approach to problem solving and ability to make connections across your organization.
Key deliverables include:
Collaborate with other departments to identify and prioritize opportunities aligned with WestJet’s overall digital strategy & roadmap, where the Data Visualization team can unlock significant value by crafting compelling visualizations and data stories that unravel the hidden stories within data.
Act as the product owner to translate ideas into well-defined business cases. Accountable for product vision & strategy, product scope / requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and metrics for success.
Develop project plans, timelines, and milestones for data visualization projects. Monitor and manage project progress, ensuring delivery within scope, budget, and timeline.
Define and implement testing strategies to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and performance of dashboards.
Facilitate communication between technical and business groups to ensure the teams are aligned and working towards a common goal from the beginning to the end of an engagement.
Create and maintain documentation for data visualization processes, standards, and best practices.
Contribute to the development, maintenance, and prioritization of the Data Visualization teams long-term product roadmap.
Be an advocate of Agile and drive continuous improvements by adopting Agile practices and tools under the mentorship of an Agile coach.
Keep current on data visualization tools, technologies and best practices to provide advice to experts, citizen developers and the community of practice.
Experience and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Business, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, etc.).
5+ years experience with a minimum of 3 years as a product owner / technical product manager or in a similar role
Experience in developing and shipping digital products and proof of concepts in an agile environment, playing the product owner role.
Possess a strong technical background with a deep understanding of data visualization principles, tools, technologies, and best practices (hands-on experience preferred as data analyst, engineer or business intelligence developer).
Hands-on experience with SQL, Power BI (including DAX and Power Query) and Tableau is essential.
Proven proficiency in independently writing SQL designing and implementing data visualization solutions in Power BI and Tableau using best practices.
Ability to balance technical and business considerations.
Experience collaborating with teams across all stages of the data value chain — platforms, engineering, governance etc.
Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills.
Analytical mindset, strong problem solving and strategic thinking abilities.
The following are considered strong assets:
Agile Product Owner or Scrum Master certification.
Product or project management training or certification.
Experience with JIRA.
Prior experience working for an airline.
